Happy Frankenstein

A modern extension turns the patched history of a 1930s house into its character.
The new facade repeats the division between service and living spaces with brickwork and three full-height sliding doors. Different masonry bonds, a concrete roof line and green steel frames create a contemporary annex that still belongs to the repaired original.
Useful division
The extension enlarges the kitchen and reconnects the house with its garden without changing the original organisation. Three full-height sliding doors open the living zone, while a more closed brick facade marks the service side.
Repair as identity
Years of alterations left a patchwork of visible injuries in the old house. The addition embraces that history with three layers of different masonry bonds rather than pretending to be untouched.
A sympathetic stranger
The strong gutter line returns as a solid concrete roof edge, while the typical green of the house reappears in new steel frames. The annex is clearly modern but connected to the original at every scale.
