Conservatory Room is a project by Broekhof Schuit Architecten in Amsterdam. Typology: Apartment extension. Status: Built.
Big, bigger, biggest. A ground-floor apartment opens towards the garden one room and one step at a time.
A messy original layout becomes a deliberate sequence of spatial qualities. Moving from the heavy brick facade and classical hallway, the apartment gradually opens through a central dining room to a bright new conservatory at the garden.

Big, bigger, biggest
The increasing size of each room organises the required programme and makes the route to the garden perceptible. A central dining area connects all the spaces used every day.
One step into the garden
The new extension sits a step below the existing floor. Sliding glass doors on two sides and large roof lights give it the atmosphere of a conservatory and dissolve the boundary with the garden.
Light from a minimum patio
Keeping the extension narrower than the existing building leaves a compact patio beside the bedroom. A reading nook looks into this light well and across to the conservatory, while the active front room faces the Rembrandtpark.
