Between Trees and Sky
Between Trees and Sky is a project by Broekhof Schuit Architecten in Rotterdam. Typology: Apartment renovation. Status: Built. Photography: Jordi Huisman.
The landscape outside becomes the material palette for a maisonette in the centre of Rotterdam.
At living level, a timber element organises cooking, eating and relaxing in response to the surrounding trees. Upstairs, blue floors, translucent polycarbonate and green bathroom surfaces refer to sky, clouds and the distant horizon.
Among the trees
The maisonette occupies the third and fourth floors of a typical 1980s block. At living level, one timber object contains entrance and toilet and divides the plan into cooking, eating and relaxing without closing the zones off.
Above the canopy
The upper floor overlooks Rotterdam beyond the trees. Blue floors, a light palette and translucent polycarbonate translate sky and clouds into the atmosphere of the bedrooms.
Bathing on the horizon
At the centre, the bathroom is built in green tones that suggest a distant field line. Sliding panels open the room to daylight so bathing can happen directly in the sun.
